Baan Thai Authentic Thai Cuisine

Baan Thai Restaurant

Baan Thai Authentic Thai Cuisine

Craving for authentic Thai cuisine in Los Baños, Laguna? Baan Thai Restaurant in Demarses Subdivision (near UPLB gate) serves authentic/real Thai cuisine as its owner and cook is a native of Northern Thailand, and she follows the traditional way of Thai cooking. She is like the Thai version of our local “manang” (home cook) who serves delicious meals at home. This restaurant is very popular among UPLB students for its authentic Thai dishes at very affordable prices.

The restaurant is neither extravagant nor grand – it was an old house that was turned into a diner with plastic chairs and tables. It was also not air-conditioned; electric fans provided the source of ventilation amidst the tropical heat. But, never mind these minor inconveniences. The food more than makes up for them. The Thai dishes they serve are home-cooked meals that satisfy the palate and sooth the soul.

For appetizer, we had green papaya salad (Som Tam), which combines the five main tastes of sweet, spicy, salty, sour and savory. The papaya was tangy and firm and the roasted peanut topping added more crunch.

Special Pad Thai

Special Pad Thai

Of course we ordered the Pad Thai! I highly recommend this dish, it was simply delicious. The rice noodles were flavoured with just the right balance of tamarind, palm sugar, chili, garlic, coriander leaves and roasted peanuts. What we had was Special Pad Thai – special because it was served nicely with scrambled egg (PhP 120). The Pad Thai with Shrimp costs PhP 150.

Value meals are also offered at Baan Thai. We tried their bestseller value meal, the Thai Bagoong Rice with drink (PhP 120). It was a complete meal in itself; plenty of fried rice with bagoong and chicken strips, topped with green mango strips and coriander leaves. I thought this dish would be yummy, but I was a bit disappointed with the taste. The combination of flavors did not work for me. The green mangoes were too sour and the “bagoong” in the rice was not as tasty as Pinoy bagoong. The chicken strips too were lacking in flavour. My husband was also not satisfied with the Thai Bagoong Rice.

Our friend ordered Lemongrass Chicken with rice and drink value meal (PhP 120). According to her, it was also good. Maybe I’ll try this next time.
